Mines in Limpopo

The mines found in this task are POM-Z, POM-Z2 and OZM from the group of fragmentation mines, also called anti-group mines.

Mine clearance project

The objective for the first phase of the MgM mine clearance project in Mozambique is the railroad from Mabalane to Monte Alto.

The source for the following information is the previous FRELIMO military commander of the region. There are no records or maps for the deployment of mines in the region. Before the actual mine clearance operation begins all the information will have to be verified on the ground.

The length of this stretch of railway is 52 km, with the mined area starting at the station of Mabalane. At a distance of 50-100 metres from the railway are four rows of mine belts. They do not always run parallel to the railway line. For example, they surround six buildings previously used as military complexes close to the line. At this place we expect to find mines up to 500 metres away from the line. At one other place the distance between mines and line may be almost a kilometre. A power line and 33 waterways on the route are presumed to have been mined. The entire area is heavily overgrown, with large trees in some areas.

This will not be an easy task for the MgM deminers, but few areas are easy to work in. MgM has the means to complete the task, using our robust hydraulic vegetation cutters to clear the vegetation ahead of our explosive detecting dogs and manual deminers.
